Twelve houses, and the point they are all counted from

A birth chart is the sky at one moment, seen from one place on earth, divided into twelve bhavas or houses. The division begins at the lagna, the exact degree rising over the eastern horizon at your birth. Everything else follows from it: the 2nd house is the next sign, the 10th of career is the tenth from there, and so on. Because the earth turns once a day, the lagna moves through all twelve signs in twenty-four hours, changing about every two hours. That is why birth time matters so much here and so little in a newspaper horoscope.

Nine grahas, not eight planets

Jyotish reads nine grahas: the Sun and Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, and the two lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. The nodes are not bodies at all — they are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's, which is why eclipses happen there — and the tradition reads them as the most modern-feeling of the nine: Rahu for ambition, foreignness and sudden rise, Ketu for detachment, loss and the things you are already finished with. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto have no place in a classical chart.

Sidereal, and the 24-degree difference

This chart is computed nirayana, against the fixed stars, using the Lahiri ayanamsa — the correction India's own Calendar Reform Committee standardised. Western astrology uses the sayana or tropical zodiac, tied to the equinox. The two agreed around the fifth century and have drifted roughly a degree every seventy-two years since. The gap is now close to twenty-four degrees, which is most of a whole sign, and it is the single reason your Vedic signs so often differ from the ones you grew up with.

Vargas, dashas and yogas, which is where a chart stops being a snapshot

The birth chart alone is a promise. Three further layers say what becomes of it. The vargas are divisional charts, each read for one department: D9 Navamsa for marriage and for the underlying strength of any promise, D10 Dashamsha for profession. The Vimshottari dasha supplies timing, dividing 120 years among the nine grahas in a sequence fixed by your Moon's nakshatra. And yogas are named combinations — Gaja Kesari, the Pancha Mahapurusha set, the Dhana yogas — each of which is a specific relationship between planets rather than a single placement. A reading that gives you planets and houses but no dasha has told you what you carry and nothing about when.

What this report will not do

It will not predict death, it will not tell you a disaster is coming, and it will not sell you a stone to prevent one. Fear-based astrology is a modern commercial habit, not a classical one; the older material is far more interested in karma and correction than in doom. Every reading here is computed from the real sky with the Swiss Ephemeris and shown with its reasoning, so you can check it rather than take it on faith.
