🌗 Western vs Vedic

Two real systems. One sky.

Western and Vedic astrology aren't rivals, and neither is "fake." They read the very same planets — they just start from a different point and ask slightly different questions. Here's the honest difference, in plain language.

No spin · no system bashing · just how each one works
The one big difference

It comes down to the zodiac itself.

Both systems use a 12-sign zodiac — but they anchor that zodiac to two different things. That single choice is why your sign can change between them.

Western · Tropical

Tied to the seasons

Western astrology fixes 0° Aries to the spring equinox — the rhythm of the seasons. It's a clean, symbolic calendar of the Sun's yearly journey, and it's wonderful for describing temperament and psychology.

Vedic · Sidereal

Tied to the real stars

Vedic astrology (Jyotish) fixes the zodiac to the actual constellations in the sky. Because the Earth slowly wobbles, the two zodiacs have drifted about 24° apart — so in Vedic, most people's Sun shifts back by one sign.

  • Depth through nakshatras (27 birth stars) beyond the sign
Common questions

Western vs Vedic — quick answers.

Is Vedic astrology more accurate than Western?

Neither is "more accurate" in an absolute sense — they answer different questions. Vedic uses the sidereal zodiac (the constellations' real positions) and is built around precise timing through dashas, which is why many people feel it pinpoints events better. Western is psychologically rich and excellent for understanding personality. A lot of people use both.

Why is my sign different in Vedic astrology?

Because of a roughly 24° gap between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs, caused by the slow wobble of the Earth (the precession of the equinoxes). About 80% of people find their Sun sign moves back by one sign in Vedic. Your free chart will show you exactly what shifts.

Which one should I use?

If you want personality and self-understanding, Western is wonderful. If you want timing, prediction, and remedies, Vedic adds tools Western doesn't have. They're not in competition — think of them as two lenses on the same sky.

What is a dasha?

A dasha is a planetary period. Vedic astrology divides your life into chapters, each governed by a planet for a set number of years — which is how it times when different themes (work, relationships, change) come forward. Western astrology has no direct equivalent built in.

Do I have to pick just one?

Not at all. They read the same planets from different starting points, so many people enjoy Western for personality and Vedic for timing and guidance. Curiosity is the only requirement.
