Common questions

Naming by Nakshatra — answered.

How does naming a baby by Nakshatra work?

In Vedic tradition (Namakaran), the Moon's Nakshatra at the moment of birth is divided into four quarters called padas, and each pada has an assigned starting syllable. A name that begins with your baby's pada syllable is said to keep the child in harmony with their birth star. This tool computes the exact Nakshatra and pada from the birth details and gives you that syllable.

What if I don't like any name starting with that syllable?

Each Nakshatra has four syllables (one per pada). The syllable for your baby's exact pada is the most auspicious, but any of the four sounds of the Nakshatra is considered suitable. We show all four so you have options — and the name you love matters most.

Is the Nakshatra name letter the same as the zodiac sign letter?

No. The popular "name as per Rashi" gives one letter for the whole Moon sign, while the Nakshatra method is more precise — it narrows it down to your baby's exact birth star and pada, which is the traditional, finer way to choose the first letter.

Do I need the exact birth time?

The Nakshatra and pada are based on the Moon's position, which moves quickly, so an accurate birth time gives the most precise pada and syllable. If the time is slightly off, the Nakshatra is usually still correct, but the pada (and so the exact syllable) can shift.
