Which Mahadasha am I running?

Vimshottari is the timing system Vedic astrology actually runs on: 120 years divided into nine planetary periods, each handing the chart to a different planet. Which period you were born into is set by the Moon's nakshatra — not your birth year — which is why two people born the same day can be living in completely different chapters. This shows the Mahadasha running right now and maps the whole cycle.

How this is worked out

Nine lords, 120 years

Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 — they always run in that order, and they always add to 120.

Your starting point

The nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth decides which lord you began under, and how much of that first period was already spent before you were born.

What a Mahadasha does

The running lord promotes its own significations. The same chart reads very differently under Jupiter than under Saturn, which is why timing questions are answered from the dasha and not from the birth chart alone.

Vimshottari, the clock Vedic astrology actually runs on

Why 120 years, and why the Moon decides your starting point

Vimshottari divides a notional lifetime of 120 years among the nine grahas: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17. They always run in that order. What differs between two people is where in the cycle they enter it, and that is set by the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth — each of the 27 nakshatras belongs to one of the nine lords. This is why two people born on the same day in the same city can be living in completely different chapters: the Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day, so a few hours changes the nakshatra and with it the whole timeline.

The balance at birth, which is where most hand calculations go wrong

You do not start a period at its beginning. You start part-way through the period of your Moon's nakshatra lord, and how far through depends on exactly how far the Moon had travelled into that nakshatra. A Moon three quarters of the way through Magha, ruled by Ketu, begins life with only a quarter of Ketu's seven years remaining. Get that fraction wrong and every date afterwards is wrong with it, which is why this is computed from the real longitude rather than from a table.

Mahadasha, Antardasha, and the unit that actually describes a year

The Mahadasha is the outer period, six to twenty years long. It is far too coarse to describe what a given year feels like. Inside it, each of the nine planets takes a turn as Antardasha, and the length of each sub-period is the Mahadasha's length multiplied by that planet's own years and divided by 120. The sequence opens with the Mahadasha lord itself. A Saturn Mahadasha of nineteen years contains a Saturn-Mercury sub-period of about two years and eight months, and that sub-period is the honest unit for a question like “what is this stretch of my life about”.

What a period is, and what it is not

A dasha does not deliver events. It hands the chart to a planet, and what that planet does depends on how it sits in your chart — its house, its dignity, what it rules, what aspects it. The same Saturn Mahadasha is a decade of steady building for one person and a decade of grinding for another, and the difference is legible in the natal chart before the period begins. This is why a dasha timeline is a map of emphasis, not a schedule of things that will happen to you.

Frequently asked

What is Vimshottari Dasha?

It is the main predictive timing system of Vedic astrology: a 120-year cycle split among nine planets, each ruling for a fixed number of years. It answers 'when', where the birth chart only answers 'what'.

How is my starting dasha decided?

By the Moon's nakshatra at birth. Each of the 27 nakshatras is assigned to one of the nine lords in a repeating order, and how far the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra decides how much of the first Mahadasha was already used up before you were born.

Is a Saturn or Rahu Mahadasha bad?

No — it is demanding, which is not the same thing. Saturn's period is slow and asks for real work, and Rahu's is unsettling and expansive. Both build things that last. What a period actually delivers depends on how those planets sit in your own chart, not on their reputation.

What is an Antardasha?

Each Mahadasha subdivides into nine Antardashas (sub-periods) in the same lordly order, which is how astrologers narrow timing from years to months. This page shows the Mahadasha level; the full Kundli goes deeper.
